As a child I had a desire, a patience, a skill for untangling knotted things no one else would bother with: necklaces, bits of string, a jump rope, the dog’s leash. With my wagon I collected plant debris, catkins and maple seeds. Building forts in the hedgerow at the back of the yard in my suburban Chicago neighborhood was a favorite endeavor.
Over the past 25 years my artwork has evolved and threaded its way back to these childhood fascinations. I am still a gatherer of things. Walking is important to my practice, a way to begin. It opens the route between the external world and the inner world of the studio. On my ritual paths, I notice changes that occur — daily and seasonally — recording what attracts my attention, 'navigating' my way through time.
My works are generated in series that explore theme and variation. They are investigations of the contrasts and similarities I find in man-made things and natural elements. I combine drawing, painting and digital photography with techniques from printmaking and bookbinding. I love materials. As the colors, forms, and textures reveal themselves, layer by layer, I follow the direction they give me. The surprising results lead me on.
