I desire simplicity.
Yet caught by complexity,
time sails past me on a roaring wind.

Time and repetition.
Theme and variation.
Intersections, crossings, juxtapositions.

These are tools.
Filters.
To clarify cultural chaos.

One form bumping into another.
Spaces of separation.
Shapes overlapping.
Smothering.
Gasping.
Breathing.

I desire simplicity.
Yet I am surrounded by complexity.

I cast my net, attempting to capture something
meaningful from the endless and repeating tide.
Meanwhile, time sails past me on an impatient wind.

I have a thirst for learning about the world.  I investigate and question this thirst using painting and drawing as a vehicle.  It is in exploring the edges of experience that I find meaning: as in the endless and repeated waves washing the shoreline; the edge where sky and earth meet; the boundary of my skin and the atmosphere.

For it is in the wetness of water that I am informed of the dryness of the land.  Here is where I begin to understand my world. These moments stay with me in some form; as memory; as visceral feeling; as emotion; as symbol and bring about a visual image.  I attempt to capture or seize the substance of each thing or moment, desiring to keep it with me for a while before it dissipates.  Making it a part of me ... showing it to you ... it becoming a part of your experience.

My process embraces the disciplines of drawing, painting, and printmaking.  Combining a variety of materials and techniques I layer, cover over, alter, cut into, and rework the surface in response to, and directed by, what came before.  My imagery reflects things man made: architecture, boats, diagrams, calendars and maps, contrasted with things I collect from nature: seeds and pods, leaves, insects, bones, things from the sea.  Both the numbers and construction lines symbolize the way I learn, create relationships, and connect information, referring to and recording my need to fix, quantify, and order the essence of my experience.
